Re-LAX You Found Your Pair

by Roza Sinaysky | 24.01.15

Every girl loves shoes. You’d be in complete denial if you thought that it’s any different on this part of the globe. Telavivian girls love shoes too, but they are all about comfort. “Make no effort and look cool”, that is the local motto even when it comes to footwear. Shani Lax understood this concept very well and designed a collection for girls like herself, who refuse to take a mortgage to buy a pair of shoes and still wanna look chic without breaking her feet in stilettos.

RS: What’s the most important things for a girl to know when she’s buying new shoes?
LAX: Other then if the shoe fits or not – you have to imagine at least one outfit, currently in your closet, that matches perfectly with the  pair you are going to buy.

RS: Tell us about how you create a pair of shoes, what is the process?
LAX: To make a really long story short – you start with the idea and the shape. The last step is very important  –  it will determine the height and personality of the shoe. After been making a few mock-ups in the studio, I sit with the pattern maker to develop the shoe. I search for the materials and all other components, and after finding every piece to match perfectly – we go to production at a small factory – they are all hand made by a team of local craftsmen.

RS: Do you prefer to make summer or winter shoes, and why?
LAX: I prefer to design what I call “multi- seasonal” shoes that can be worn almost all the time, rather than heavy boots or a thong flip flops.

RS: Who are you shoe heroes?
LAX: Just to name a few: The Godfather of Shoes – Salvatore Ferragamo and Azzedine Alaia. Balenciaga’s shoes are always fabulous and surprising every season. Another shoe hero of mine is the photographer Guy Bourdin – who created radical and sexual images for  shoes.

RS: Why should I own a pair of your shoes?
LAX: Well, I guess it’s like asking “Why should you fall in love?” You just do. I promise you’ll get a kick out of it …

RS: What are your plans for LAX for your next collection and this year?
LAX: I always have this tension between wanting to be classy and mysterious in my designs, and to go absolutely wild without giving much thought  to the commercial aspect . I’m anxious to see which side will win this battle. I’m planing to expand my collection this summer with more styles and higher heels, and hopefully soon you would find LAX shoes in selected boutiques abroad.
